El Molí de la Torre Wedding. Emma’s & Piotr’s Industrial Chic in the Empordà.

If I had to pick a day that sums up why I love being a destination wedding photographer in Barcelona, Emma and Piotr’s celebration would be right at the top. It was a masterclass in how to host a wedding that feels both high-end and incredibly personal. Think golden Mediterranean light, a historic mill, and a dance floor fueled by CO2 guns and the timeless energy of ABBA.

They chose one of my absolute favorite wedding venues in Girona: El Molí de la Torre. Tucked away in the Empordà countryside near Figueres, it’s a venue that perfectly captures that “industrial-chic” aesthetic that international couples are currently dreaming of.

A Destination Wedding at El Molí de la Torre: Rustic Luxury near Barcelona

For local couples and those travelling to Spain for a destination wedding, this venue strikes the perfect balance: it offers old-world European charm without the usual logistical headaches of rural Spain.

The Aesthetic: A neoclassical farmhouse defined by brick arches, tall cypress trees, and a hidden greenhouse. It feels like a movie set.

The Flow: It’s a private estate. You move seamlessly from a garden ceremony to a courtyard cocktail hour and finally into the dramatic indoor hall. No buses, no transfers.

The Location: Located just 90 minutes from Barcelona (BCN) airport and 15 minutes from the high-speed AVE train station in Figueres.

Emma and Piotr based their guests at Hotel Pirineos in Figueres. This is a pro strategy: it gives your guests easy city infrastructure and ensures the drive to the wedding is short and stress-free.

The Ceremony: A “High-Flying” Surprise in the Gardens


Emma is the kind of bride who turns a Pinterest board into a professional binder. She planned every detail herself—from the vases to the signage—before handing the execution over to their coordinator, Paola. The result was a ceremony that felt intimate, grounded, and surrounded by nature.

However, the highlight of the ceremony was the “flight safety” demo. Because Emma is a flight attendant, they secretly hid life vests under a few random chairs. Just before the vows, one of Emma’s friends pulled out a safety card while Toby began reading the announcement, and guests suddenly realised they were part of a live safety drill. It was hilarious, unexpected, and exactly the kind of personal touch that makes a wedding unforgettable.

Documentary Wedding Photography: Maximizing Party Time

Emma and Piotr didn’t want to spend their wedding posing for hours; they wanted to be present with friends who had travelled from all around the world, some from as far away as overseas. As a documentary wedding photographer, my priority is always that the couple enjoy their day to the fullest and stay in the moment.

To do this, we used Micro Portrait Sessions:

  • First Look: 5 minutes on the hotel terrace (private and quiet).
  • The Gardens: 10 minutes wandering the estate during cocktail hour.
  • Golden Hour: 10 minutes in that soft, warm Empordà light right before dinner.

The beauty of an El Molí de la Torre wedding is that the greenhouse, stone walls, and driveway are all within a two-minute walk. We created editorial-style portraits without “kidnapping” them from their own party.

The Party: Cold Fireworks and CO2 Guns


Once the sun set, the energy shifted. The couple made their entrance into the main hall surrounded by cold fireworks, moving straight into a first dance while a saxophonist played from the balcony above.

The night ended in a blur of “Hora Loca” energy. The indoor hall at El Molí de la Torre is built for a party—stone arches, high ceilings, and great acoustics. Between the light-up capes and the CO2 gun Emma and Piotr used to spray clouds of smoke over the dance floor, it was the perfect end to an incredible night.

Expert / Photographer Tips for Planning Your Wedding in Empordà


If you are planning a destination wedding at El Molí de la Torre, here are my top logistical tips:

Manage the Light:


In summer (July/August), the sun is intense. Start your ceremony at 6:00 PM or later. This keeps guests cool and ensures the light is soft and flattering for photos.

Trust your team and let go.


The biggest difference I see between stressed couples and relaxed couples is not the budget or the size of the wedding. It is how much they trust their team.
Once the day starts, let your vendors do what you hired them to do. The florist knows where the flowers go. The planner knows the timeline. The DJ knows how to read the room. As long as you have communicated clearly beforehand, you can let go.
Emma and Piotr are a perfect example of this. They were completely focused on each other and their guests. If something did not go exactly to plan, they laughed, kept dancing and moved on. That attitude is the best planning tip I can give anyone.

Guest Experience:

Treat it like a holiday. Provide welcome drinks immediately upon arrival and organize shuttles from Figueres so guests can drink and relax without driving.

Trust the Venue:

The industrial/rustic look is the selling point. You don’t need heavy decor to cover it up—let the stone walls and greenery shine.

How far is El Molí de la Torre from Barcelona?

It is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes by car, or a 55-minute high-speed train ride (Barcelona Sants to Figueres-Vilafant).

Is there accommodation on-site?

Not yet – as I write this in late December 2025, the top floors are still under renovation, so the venue is only for the event itself. I recommend basing guests in Figueres (about 10–15 minutes away) or renting nearby masias for the bridal party.

What is the best time of year to get married here?

May, June, September, and October are ideal for outdoor living. August is beautiful but requires a later timeline to beat the heat.

Do you travel to photograph weddings outside Barcelona?

Yes. While I am based in Barcelona, I regularly photograph weddings across Girona, the Costa Brava, and the Empordà region. I also travel throughout Spain and abroad.
